| Description | A plaque attributed to the "Danube
Riders"
cult, based in the roman provinces along the Danube. On this plaque, there are serpents in the top two corners. Within the arch, firstly there is Sol, riding in a biga. Underneath is a figure of a soldier on one side with a spear, and on the other what appears to be a matronly figure. Between are the Danube Riders, often interpreted as the Dioscuri. Often they carry weapons but on this plaque they have hands outstretched towards a star. In the middle is a female figure who is described as holding food in a cloth for the horses. The horses are trampling on a naked man and a large fish. The section underneath has two men under a tree, one appears to be butchering a hanging hare. In the middle there is a feast scene with people around a plate with a fish on it. To the right two naked figures appear to be about to enter. The bottom has a tripod, a small amphora, a coiled snake, a kantharos, a lion and a cockerel. |
