Roman Mounts

Item 1028: Roman Military Belt Mount.
Date Late 4th century. mount
Size 50 mm high, 16 mm widest
Weight 7.3 gram
Material Silver
Description
The back of the stiffener is plain. Propeller-shaped with chamfered outside edge. The triangular arms both have two rivet holes. There is also a rivet hole in the circular section. The front is decorated with a pattern following the shape of the mount and made with a triangular shaped punch.
It would have been riveted vertically to a wide belt to stop it curling over at the edges, though these have also been used to decorate wooden caskets.
